"There are decades when nothing happens, and there are weeks
when decades happen." -V.I. Lenin
This is the first of a series of discussions about critical years
in the 20th century. As the First World War entered its 4th year,

men who started the year 1917 uninvolved with the Great War would
soon make decisions that would determine the outcome, and shape
geopolitics for the rest of the century.
